The Detroit Medical Center’s (DMC) record of service has provided medical excellence throughout the history of the Metropolitan Detroit area. From the founding of Children’s Hospital in 1886, to the creation of the first mechanical heart at Harper Hospital 50 years ago, to our compassion for the underserved, our legacy of caring is unmatched.

Detroit Medical Center Facilities

DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan,

with more than 33 clinical specialties, is an international leader in pediatric and adolescent medicine. Surgical services include general, thoracic, reconstructive and cardiovascular. Imaging technology designed especially for children provides advanced diagnostic services such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and MRI. Children’s Hospital is southeast Michigan’s only pediatric Level I Trauma Center, equipped to handle the most severe injuries and illnesses. Experts in pediatric critical care, rehabilitation, neonatal and perinatal medicine provide care for thousands of children every year.

 

 

DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, Michigan’s first Level I Trauma Center, is an adult specialty hospital offering expertise in emergency medicine, complex trauma, critical care, neuroscience and geriatrics. As the region’s leader in emergency medicine, Receiving’s emergency department treats more than 85,000 patients annually, and nearly 60% of Michigan’s emergency physicians are trained at Receiving. Detroit Receiving also features the state’s largest burn center, Michigan’s first hospital-based 24/7 hyperbaric oxygen therapy program, and Metro Detroit’s first certified primary stroke center. 

 

DMC Harper University Hospital, has distinguished itself in surgery and medicine and is known for its clinical expertise, innovative research and advanced education. A specialty referral hospital, Harper has established centers of emphasis in neurosciences, vascular services, multidisciplinary cardiovascular services, hypertension, stroke prevention and heart failure. Additional specialties include bariatric (gastric bypass surgery), critical care, pulmonary medicine, kidney transplants, thoracic surgery, and minimally invasive cardiac procedures. Harper’s neurology program is internationally recognized for new advances in multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular diseases, epilepsy, neurogenetic disorders, neurobehavioral disorders and cognitive disorders. As the hospital with the first mechanical heart by-pass pump, Harper has retained its leadership position in state-of-the-art technology. Today, Harper houses Michigan’s first MRI machine, a 64-slice CT scanner, state-of-the-art electrophysiology and cardiac catheterization labs, and nuclear cardiac imaging facilities. U.S.News & World Report named Harper University Hospital one of 2007 “America’s Best Hospitals” -- ranking it #31 in Neurology and Neurosurgery among the top 50.

 

DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, in Oakland county, has earned recognition as one of the area’s and the nation’s top hospitals for patient satisfaction. This hospital features the Harris Birthing Center with all private birthing suites, a regional specialty center, the Charach Cancer Treatment Center, (affiliated with the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center), the Krieger Center for Senior Adults, state-of-the-art surgical suites, cardiac services, and comprehensive inpatient and outpatient diagnostic care. 

 

DMC Hutzel Women’s Hospital, is nationally recognized for cutting-edge research in high-risk obstetrics, infertility, reproductive genetics, neonatology, maternal special care, midwifery, gynecology, urogynecology, menopause, permanent birth control and alternatives to hysterectomy. Hutzel has been ranked as the number one hospital in the nation in research awards for its OB/GYN physicians. With a rich history of over 137 years as Michigan’s first and only hospital for women, the patients also benefit from Hutzel’s commitment to research and education. Hutzel Women’s Hospital is home to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Perinatology Research Branch (PRB) and is recognized as a leader in women’s health by physicians and researchers across the country.

  

DMC Kresge Eye Institute , is considered a leading center for the preservation of sight. The Institute offers general vision services for patients of all ages. Known internationally for its contributions to ophthalmology, Kresge’s clinical specialties include glaucoma, cataract surgery, retinal, vitreal and macular diseases, plastic and cosmetic eye surgery, diabetic-related eye conditions, neuro-related eye disorders and ocular prosthetics. Kresge Eye Institute houses the Ligon Research Center of Vision where physicians are studying artificial vision. Kresge physicians maintain a prominent position in all areas of vision research.

 

DMC Surgery Hospital, in Madison Heights is the first regional hospital focused on orthopaedics. This specialty hospital’s comprehensive services include treatment for arms and elbows, back, foot and ankle, hand and wrist, hip and shoulders. The hospital offers 24 hour emergency care and psychiatric inpatient services. With an expert team of physicians and caregivers, this hospital is recognized as one of the best orthopaedic care hospitals in the U.S.

 

DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, is one of the nation’s largest hospitals specializing in rehabilitation medicine and research. RIM is known for its clinical expertise in spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, complex trauma and orthopedics and catastrophic injury care. The Institute is home to many innovative programs, including the Southeastern Michigan Traumatic Brain Injury System (SEMTBIS), and the Center for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery, a world-class facility designed to implement and study innovative treatments in spinal cord injury recovery. With nearly 30 outpatient sites located throughout southeast Michigan, it is also a center of choice for persons recovering from sports and orthopaedic injuries. RIM provides state-of-the-art medical care to people at all levels of activity and to athletes at all levels of participation including recreational, high school, college, professional, and elite.

 

DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital, is DMC’s largest hospital. As a full-service community hospital located in northwest Detroit, Sinai-Grace offers a comprehensive heart center, cancer care, gerontology, emergency medicine, obstetrics/gynecology and cosmetic/plastic surgery. Sinai-Grace’s joint replacement program features a revolutionary minimally invasive knee and hip replacement surgery that attracts people from all over the country. Sinai-Grace also operates more than 25 outpatient care sites and ambulatory surgery centers throughout Wayne and Oakland Counties. Sinai-Grace is one of 10 hospitals in the nation to be awarded a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant to set the standards of cardiac care for hospitals and physicians throughout the nation. U.S.News & World Report named Sinai-Grace Hospital one of 2007 “America’s Best Hospitals” -- ranking it #48 in Neurology and Neurosurgery among the top 50.

 

In Partnership: The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center, provides patients throughout Michigan and beyond with comprehensive cancer care certified by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and backed by state-of-the-science cancer research. More than 7,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients come to the Center annually. At the Center, more than 1,200 doctors, scientists and staff are exclusively focused on compassionate cancer care and groundbreaking cancer research. The Meyer L. Prentis Comprehensive Cancer Center of Metropolitan Detroit, operated by Karmanos, is one of 39 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States. This designation means the Center conducts advanced cancer research and translates that research into the best treatment options for patients. A beacon of hope for those confronting cancer, The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center is one of the world’s leading cancer centers.
